At just 23 weeks gestation, her future was uncertain. Today, she is defying every expectation—and discovering what’s possible when growth is nurtured in the right environment.
When Growth Finds Its Wings
At just 23 weeks gestation, weighing only 540 grams—barely over a pound—a baby girl entered the world under the most fragile of circumstances.
Delivered via emergency C-section, she showed no signs of life at birth. For five long minutes, medical staff performed chest compressions before her heart began to beat.
The prognosis was devastating. Doctors estimated a 40% chance of survival—and less than a 20% chance of any meaningful quality of life. Her parents were told to prepare for a future marked by severe limitations: blindness, immobility, and little to no ability to communicate.
Yet, against overwhelming odds, she survived.
A Fight for Every Milestone
After six months in the NICU, she was discharged with a feeding tube, oxygen support, and a long road ahead.
Therapy became a constant. Early intervention teams worked tirelessly to help her reach even the smallest milestones—rolling over, sitting up, and eventually crawling.
But progress was slow. And often, it was painful.
By two and a half, she remained nonverbal and unable to walk. Therapy sessions became distressing, triggering intense emotional responses. Even having visitors in the home became overwhelming.
An autism diagnosis followed, along with another discouraging prediction: that she would likely never develop functional speech.
Her family pursued every available option—speech therapy, adaptive communication devices, behavioral therapy—but meaningful progress remained limited.
Until something unexpected changed everything.
A Moment That Changed Everything
Her first experience on a horse was uncertain.
For 45 minutes, she cried—overwhelmed and unsure. Then, something shifted.
In the final moments, she became calm. Still. At peace.
As her mother buckled her into the car afterward, she smiled. And then, quietly, she spoke:
“That was fun. We should do it again.”
It was more than a moment—it was a breakthrough.
A Different Kind of Therapy
Soon after, the family found Angel’s Landing.
What made the difference wasn’t just the presence of horses—it was the approach.
Each session was tailored to her needs. Therapy became something she engaged in, not something done to her.
Simple activities—choosing a flower, completing a puzzle, tossing a ball—became meaningful steps forward.
And the horse became a powerful partner in her progress.
When she began, she required three adults just to stay upright. Years of immobility had weakened her core so significantly she couldn’t sit unassisted.
But over time, something remarkable happened.
From Survival to Strength
Through equine-assisted therapy, her strength grew. Her balance improved. And her confidence followed.
She learned to walk. Then run. Then jump and climb.
Within a year, her family made a bold decision: they stepped away from traditional therapies and focused on equine therapy supported by structured work at home.
The results were extraordinary.
Within two years, she transitioned into a Montessori classroom—reading and writing alongside her peers.
By age seven or eight, she fully integrated into a traditional educational setting.
Redefining What’s Possible
Today, her life looks nothing like the prognosis her family once received.
She speaks. She reads. She writes. She solves math problems. She prepares simple meals, manages her hygiene, and participates in everyday childhood experiences.
She still faces challenges—but she is thriving.
She is on a path toward independence.
More Than Therapy
Her story is not just one of survival—it’s one of transformation.
Equine-assisted therapy provided something traditional settings could not: a connection that reduced trauma, built trust, and unlocked engagement.
It supported her physical development, strengthened her communication, and gave her something even more powerful—confidence.
At Angel’s Landing, therapy doesn’t happen in a clinical room.
It happens through movement, connection, and relationship.
Where Growth Takes Flight
Stories like this remind us that outcomes are not defined by early predictions.
With the right support, the right environment, and the right connection—growth can take extraordinary paths.
At Angel’s Landing, that growth is nurtured every day.
Because sometimes, it just takes a horse… to help someone find their wings.
